Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART)
Dental amalgam fillings, which contain around 50% elemental mercury, can release mercury vapor during removal, and we take extensive precautions to minimize this risk.
The SMART protocol is based on scientific evidence and recommendations developed by the IAOMT (International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology). These recommendations go beyond traditional safe amalgam removal techniques by incorporating additional protective measures identified through recent scientific research.
During your amalgam removal procedure, we adhere to the SMART protocol to ensure your safety. This includes using masks, water irrigation, and high-volume suction to minimize the release and inhalation of mercury vapor.
